Three-4-Thursday

River House

The highlight of our first day on the San Juan River was a visit to the cliff dwelling known as the River House.  The ancestral puebloans resided here starting in about 700 A.D.  The photograph above shows the dwelling's location in a south-facing alcove, ideal for this dessert environment.  In the background is 700-foot-high Comb Ridge.  Nearby is San Juan Hill, the route taken by the Morman "Hole-in-the-Rock" expedition in 1880 to cross the steep ridge.  Comb Ridge is a  monocline 85 miles in length, extending both north and south from the river.

It is easy to see why the Pueblo people, who relied upon irrigation-enhanced agriculture, chose this location, which is about a quarter mile from the river.

More photos of the River House will be posted next week.
