Saturday Paddlers - San Marcos River

The Saturday Paddlers (16 boats with 17 paddlers) started their river trip at the Westerfield crossing (known to Joline as County Road 101 and to the maps as County Road 266 and N. Old Bastrop Highway). They exited the river at Shady Grove Campground (also known as Spencer's). The river was running at about 130 cfs.

Kathy, Reiko, Sue Miller of the Waco Paddle Club, and Ann wait for the group to return from the shuttle.

The intrepid shuttlers return. Ready to paddle.

Some of the local wildlife lines up to watch.

Round 'em up, move 'em out, the wagonmaster signals.

Even Joan obeys.

Sue awash in yellow.

At the Martindale Dam portage, Mike gives praise for all types of wildlife.

Meanwhile, back at the portage ...

Shortly downstream from the dam, the group encounters some rapids at a road crossing.

The preferred route is to pass to the river left of the large rock, as shown by Joline. Everyone follows suit.

Well, almost everyone ...

Look out!

Joan: "I meant to do that!"

Reiko makes it look easy.

As does Jim.

Mike almost smiles.

Nancy G. does smile.

And Nancy W. enjoys the ride.

At the takeout.

Waiting for a table at the Grist Mill Restaurant in Gruene. Note: Perhaps not a good idea on the July 4 weekend.

Joan (far left), Reiko, two Nancy's, Mike and Kathy.

Nancy and Joan seek shelter from the sudden rainstorm, and decide to replenish fluids lost during the long paddle.

Fully replenished, and looking forward to the next trip.
