Brazos River - Prologue

Well, it wasn't exactly John Graves in Goodbye to a River, but it was a nice adventure for ten paddlers who retraced the first part of his epic journey on the Upper Brazos River. A group of Dallas-area guys were kind enough to include my friend Mike Scudday and me in their annual "Hail With It" trip on the river. We gathered on Thursday evening of Memorial Day weekend at Rochelle's Campground, which is located on Hwy. 4 where it crosses the river. The photo above is of the Brazos just below our campsite.

After I picked up Bill and his kayak in San Marcos, the two of us headed to Michael's apartment in Austin. As you can see, Michael lives right on Lady Bird Lake across from downtown. Nice looking trailer, eh?

Joe, Mac, Brent and Ron around our picnic table.

Ron and Michael hoarding the pickled herring.

Three water nymphs enhanced the scenery. We agreed that youth is truly wasted on the young.

It was early to bed, as the schedule put together by Brent the Taskmaster called for an early start on Friday morning.
